02.05.2016 SOLAR IMPULSE 2 BEGINS UNITED STATES CROSSING – FIRST STOP: PHOENIX
Solar Impulse 2 (Si2) – the solar airplane of Swiss pioneers Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg capable of flying day and night without fuel – took off from the Moffett Airfield this morning and is expected to land at Phoenix Goodyear Airport this evening. This flight marks the beginning of the crossing of the United States in the context of the attempt to achieve the first ever Round-The-World Solar Flight, the goal of which is to demonstrate how modern clean technologies can achieve the impossible.

Blue skies and a northeast wind provide perfect flying conditions for pilots and co-pilots arriving by air at the trade fair. A hive
of activity at Friedrichshafen Airport – and the international aviation show reports a perfect landing. With 30,800 industry visitors (exceeding the 29,700 at the directly comparable AERO 2014), AERO 2016 was a great success for both exhibitors and spectators, coming to a close on Saturday after four full days. A total of 606 companies from around the world took part. General aviation was well represented with singleengined and multi-engined airplanes, helicopters, gyrocopters, turboprops and multi-jet aircraft. The full range of flight topics was rounded off by drones, new aircraft engines and avionics, aviationoriented accessories and services, as well as flight school course offerings. Klaus Wellmann (CEO of Messe Friedrichshafen, the host venue) and Roland Bosch (AERO Show Director) were very pleased
with the four-day trade fair, calling it “A custom-tailored industry gathering for everyone who not only lives the dream of flight with great passion, but also does great business in selling aircraft, avionics and accessories.”

Friedrichshafen – The AERO will take off with about 600 exhibitors from April 20 to 23, 2016. In 2016, the focus of Europe’s largest general aviation trade fair will stretch from light aircraft and helicopters to business jets. At the same time, special thematic focus areas like the eflight expo, Avionics Avenue, the Aero Conferences, the Engine Area and RPAS Expo will return in 2016. The Aviation and Pilots Competence Center will be oriented towards the next generation of potential pilots.

The crew of a Russian Mi-26 military helicopter from the Eastern Military District Army Aviation airbase saved a baby polar bear from starving to death in the Arctic, after the young bear became separated from its mother.

Crews on board Russian military Mi-26 helicopters have discovered a new island in the Arctic Ocean. The island was identified from the air above the Vasilevsky shallows by two Mi-26 helicopters that were carrying equipment from the Yakutian port of Tiksi to the Novosibirskie Islands. This geographical discovery expands the Russian Federation’s territorial waters by 452 square kilometres.

Russian Helicopters, a subsidiary of Oboronprom, part of State Corporation Rostec, discussed a broad range of issues to do with restructuring and upgrading its production capacities and streamlining its management processes at a meeting of the company’s Collegium on 24 April. The Collegium – held at Kazan Helicopters, a Russian Helicopters company – also discussed the production efficiency of Russia’s helicopter-construction sector today and its future development.

Russian Helicopters, a subsidiary of Oboronprom, part of State Corporation Rostec, has delivered its civilian multirole Ka-32A11BC helicopter to the Shanghai Public Security Directorate in China. The helicopter is produced at Kumertau Aviation Production Enterprise and the contract for this helicopter was concluded in 2012.
